FAQS
Staircase Frequently Asked Questions
What types of staircases does Steel Studio offer?
We design and install a wide range of steel staircases, including floating and spine stairs, straight and turning flights, external and fire-escape staircases, and steel stair structures with timber or concrete treads. We can also provide steel cage formwork for in-situ concrete stairs.
Can you work from our architect’s drawings?
Yes. We regularly work from architectural drawings, 3D models and design concepts. Our team develops detailed shop drawings, resolves structural and balustrade interfaces and coordinates with other trades before fabrication begins.
How do you ensure staircases are SANS compliant?
We design staircases around SANS deemed-to-satisfy rules for riser and tread dimensions, going, headroom, handrail heights and balustrade requirements. Structural elements are checked by qualified professionals, and we can provide the necessary documentation and certification for sign-off.
Do you only do feature staircases, or also service/escape stairs?
We do both. While many of our projects involve high-visibility feature stairs, we also design and install robust service and escape staircases where practicality and durability are the priority.
What finishes can I choose for my staircase?
Options include painted or powder-coated steel, hot-dip galvanising for external stairs, stainless steel elements, and a range of timber or other tread finishes. We’ll recommend finishes based on your design intent, location and maintenance expectations.
How early should I involve Steel Studio in my project?
The earlier the better. Bringing us in during design or early technical stages allows us to advise on stair layout, structural depth and balustrade integration, which can save time and changes later in the programme.
How do you handle installation on busy or occupied sites?
Our installation teams are used to working on both live and new-build sites. We plan lifting, access and protection measures in advance and coordinate closely with the main contractor to minimise disruption and maintain site safety.
