BALUSTRADE TYPES
Choose From Different Types of Balustrades
Every building asks for something slightly different from its balustrades. That’s why we don’t force you into one system.
Steel Studio designs and installs a range of glass and steel balustrades that can be tailored to your architecture, budget and safety requirements.
FAQS
Balustrade Frequently Asked Questions
At what stage in my building process should I install balustrades?
The key is timing: install your balustrades as late as possible. Choose your design and qualified supplier once your concrete work is complete and fully measurable. Installing later ensures:
- Seamless finishes: Top-fixed balustrades installed via core drilling allow for neat, continuous tiling lines after installation.
- Protected surfaces: Tile adhesives and acid-based cleaners can damage stainless steel finishes or cause corrosion marks. For wooden floors or carpets, install balustrades first to avoid water damage from the wet core-drilling process.
What is the life cycle costing of the stainless steel material in my balustrade system?
Life Cycle Costing (LCC) is a method for identifying and quantifying all costs (both initial and ongoing) associated with a project or installation over its lifetime. A comprehensive LCC analysis allows material specifiers and users to understand the true implications of future expenses, including not just financial outlay but the inconvenience of maintenance and replacements. This makes stainless steel the natural choice for your balustrade system, offering durability and long-term value far beyond coated mild steel alternatives.
How do I need to maintain my stainless steel balustrades?
Like any investment, routine, simple cleaning will ensure the longevity of the product. Proprietary cleaners are available on the market today, but routine washing down with a mild detergent and clean water should suffice. As a rule of thumb, clean your stainless steel as routinely as you would your windows. For more stubborn marks or stains, such as paint or grease, please contact your supplier for advice on the best solution.
How do I know what grade of stainless steel I should use for my balustrade application?
Your supplier should have the answers for you and be suitably qualified and experienced to recommend the correct grade for the application. Always choose a reputable fabricator with references, who will be able to advise and justify the material grade suitable for your application.
If you are still uncertain, feel free to contact SASSDA, who provide free technical advice to the consumer. Our salespeople are qualified to recommend the correct grade of stainless steel for your railings. Two commonly used grades of Austenitic Stainless Steels are used for balustrades, handrails and staircases.
Grade 304 is the basic chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel and has been found suitable for the widest range of applications. This type has excellent resistance to corrosion from exposure to weather. It is the grade which is normally used for interior and exterior applications.
Grade 316 offers more corrosion resistance through the addition of molybdenum. This type is desirable where severe corrosion conditions exist, such as in coastal environments.
