Glass Balustrades’ Frequently Asked Questions
Like with any balustrade system some degree of maintenance is required. It is true that stainless steel requires significantly less maintenance and generally last longer or even forever should it be maintained regularly.
Mild Steel can last if maintained and finished correctly with the correct paint. Regular visual checks of your balustrade system for any exposed areas where the mild steel material may have been exposed and the quick corrective action to “touch up” those areas will keep your balustrade looking brand new.

Mild Steel is most definitely cheaper than Stainless Steel Material. However if you take design into account you may end up with an more expensive mild steel system due to the labout component to achieve certain designs. Its important to request a quote for comparison should you be considering going with a alternative design in Mild Steel. Its also important to note that while stainless steel is generally more expensive, it requires less maintenance and generally last a lot longer.
From experience you do not need to galvanise mildsteel if you paint the balustrade correctly especially if your balustrades are internal and in an airconditioned environment.
Its important to note that if your project is within 7km of the coastline and your balustrades will be exposed to the elements we highly recommend galvanizing your balustrades or looking at a stainless steel alternative.

The short answer is yes, however there is a lot to consider before you decide to go this route. If you have long runs as is the case most of the time the design needs to be modular in nature with mechanical fixings. This due to the fact that you cant weld onto powder coated material meaning you need grind off the powder coating before welding and touch up afterwards. Those touch ups are often visible and leave an undesirable finish. Secondly you cannot transport or even fit for example a 20m run into a powder coating facility. Powder coating also tends to chip a lot easier than a well painted balustrade leaving the Mild Steel exposed to the elements and at risk of corroding. I recommend contracting an experienced paint contractor to rather paint the balustrades after it is installed on site for the best hassle free installation.
