Designing for the Outdoors: Custom Balustrades for Decks, Patios, and Gardens

November 27, 2024 by inbound

Whether you want to include a patio balustrade for security, style or added value, choosing the right outdoor balustrade design that finishes your space makes all the difference.

So if you’re looking for patio balustrade ideas or ways to upgrade your deck balustrade, the right balustrade installation can add significant style and value to your home. With options ranging from decorative balustrades to custom balustrades that match your specific design vision, an outdoor balustrade can seamlessly blend functionality with beauty, creating a cohesive and inviting space.

Why Worry about Your Outdoor Balustrade Design?

Finding a well-suited outdoor balustrade design for your deck, patio, or garden has more benefits than simply sectioning off the space. A thoughtfully chosen balustrade enhances safety, adds visual appeal, and can even increase the property’s value, making it an essential feature for any outdoor area.

Safety and Security

For raised decks, patios, and garden terraces, a sturdy balustrade is crucial for safety. Properly installed balustrades for decks help prevent accidents by providing a stable boundary, especially in areas with high foot traffic or for homes with children or pets. A quality balustrade installation ensures that safety is as stylish as it is reliable.

Visual Appeal

Beyond functionality, a decorative balustrade brings character to outdoor spaces. From sleek glass panels to custom steel designs, a thoughtfully selected outdoor balustrade can elevate the aesthetic of a garden or patio, creating an inviting environment that flows with the rest of the property. Patio balustrade ideas range from minimalist to ornate, ensuring there’s a style to suit every taste.

Property Value

Investing in a high-quality balustrade can increase your property’s market value. An attractive, well-installed balustrade signals that a property is maintained with care, and unique custom balustrades can add distinctive homeowner appeal, making a lasting impression on potential buyers.

Choosing the Right Design

When it comes to outdoor balustrade design, balancing style and function is essential. The right aesthetic can turn a patio, deck, or garden area into a striking extension of your home’s personality. Here are some factors to consider when selecting the best style and materials for your decorative balustrade:

Different Styles

Luckily, there are a multitude of outdoor balustrade styles to choose from — especially if you work with a professional balustrade installer.

There are a few things to consider: for high-traffic areas with children or pets, choose a style with clean lines and minimal gaps for added safety, such as sleek, modern glass panels or closely spaced vertical balusters. For deck balustrades, opt for designs that enhance the view, like transparent glass or open cable railings.

Material Choices

Choosing the correct material will set the tone for your space while ensuring it complements your home’s architectural style.Different materials offer distinct advantages and styles for outdoor balustrades. Stainless steel is durable and low-maintenance, perfect for achieving a modern industrial look. Glass provides an open, airy feel, especially effective in spaces where preserving views is a priority.

For those who prefer a natural touch, wood balustrades blend seamlessly with garden and patio spaces, adding warmth and a timeless appeal.

Customisation Tips

But when in doubt, it’s better to go bespoke. Opting for custom balustrades allows you to tailor every detail to match your outdoor area’s style and function.

For a personalised look, consider mixing materials — such as combining glass panels with wood or stainless steel posts for a balanced design that’s both durable and stylish. Play with finishes and colours that harmonise with your patio or deck, and think about details like rail height, post spacing, and decorative accents.

Customising your outdoor balustrade ensures that it not only meets practical needs but also aligns with your unique space.

Outdoor Balustrade Installation: What to Expect

The outdoor balustrade design process begins with careful planning and design selection, ensuring that each balustrade fits the style and functional needs of the space. You’ll chat with the balustrade installers to map out all the details of the project. Accurate measurements are then taken to guarantee a perfect fit, with special considerations for outdoor conditions, such as ground stability and weather exposure.

Once measurements and materials are set, the installation itself is typically completed within a few days, depending on the project’s scope. Professional installation ensures that deck balustrades or patio balustrades are secure, durable, and aligned with safety standards. By working with a knowledgeable team, you’ll enjoy a seamless installation process and a final product designed for longevity, elegance, and resilience in any outdoor setting.

Unique Balustrade Design Ideas from Different Cultures

Unique Balustrade Design Ideas from Different Cultures

Have you been seeing the same balustrade design ideas over and over? While straightforward stainless steel balustrades will always be in style, for some they may lack that wow factor. To add character to your space, it could be time to get aboard to find some balustrade design inspiration.

You could explore the minimalist Asian style to the ornate intracity of the Middle East or bring it home with some African influence. The Steel Studio team can help you incorporate these global trends — like wooden balustrade designs and decorative balustrades — into a design that’s uniquely yours.

Asian Balustrade Design Ideas

Asia is home to some of the most iconic and diverse architectural styles in the world, and its decorative balustrade designs are no exception.

Japanese

In Japanese architecture, minimalism and simplicity are core beliefs. This is reflected in their unique balustrade designs which often feature clean lines and natural materials such as wood.

Wooden balustrade designs are common in traditional Japanese homes, temples, and tea houses, where the focus is on creating a sense of harmony with the surrounding environment. The understated elegance of these designs provides a perfect example of how traditional aesthetics can influence modern balustrade design ideas.

If you want to harmonise nature in your interior, this is the balustrade design inspiration for you.

Chinese

Chinese architecture, on the other hand, is known for its pursuit of balancing the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal and water). Feng Shui also plays an important part. Think of sleek, dark wood paired with delicate decorative elements and rich colour palettes.

Chinese balustrades are strong, with deliberate lines and patterns. But they can also lean towards the softer side with motifs and cultural symbols or imagery. It’s all about striking the correct composition within the space as a whole.

Indian

India’s approach to architecture and interior design can be described as lush, vibrant and ornate.

You’ll be seeing a lot of stone balustrade designs intricately carved with floral and geometric patterns. The use of jali, or lattice screens, is a distinctive feature in many Indian buildings, offering both privacy and decorative appeal.

Middle Eastern Balustrade Designs

The Middle East is renowned for its rich history of art and architecture, where intricate patterns and luxurious materials come together to create truly stunning designs. It’s a brilliant source for unique balustrade design ideas.

Persian Palaces

Persian — or Iranian — architecture is celebrated for its attention to detail, particularly in the design of its palaces and mosques. Although it boasts a lot of variety, it has an unmistakable style.

Nothing is trivial when it comes to this culture’s approach to design. Throughout their long history, the use of scale and form has been consistent. Persian design isn’t scared to take up space. Imagine tall columns and arches made from heavy stone. And if you’re truly committed, pull design inspiration from their painted motifs.

African Balustrade Design Inspiration

Africa’s architectural heritage is as diverse as the continent itself, with each region offering different approaches to design and craftsmanship. If you’re leaning towards a wooden balustrade design, this is the continent to be looking at.

Moroccan Riads

Moroccan architecture, particularly in riads (traditional homes with interior courtyards) is famous for its use of intricate metalwork and vibrant geometric patterns. It brings outdoor and indoor living together in a spectacular fashion.

Balustrades in Moroccan riads often feature wrought iron or steel designs, with curves and shapes that complement the grand arches that are also usually present. These steel balustrade designs balance out the space and complete the idea of bringing two opposite elements together.

Traditional African Balustrades

While every African culture is truly unique, they are united by their deep appreciation for the natural world. And this is reflected in their architecture and interior design even into the modern age.

There’s a distinct emphasis on materials like wood, stone and clay. Balustrades are often made from these materials and are created to be sturdy, almost immovable. A well-crafted African-inspired balustrade is meant to last.

Modern African Balustrades

As Africa continues to urbanise and grow, modern balustrade designs are being fully embraced. Many are finding a way to mix this with traditional aesthetics or materials.

In modern African balustrades, steel, glass, and other durable materials are often used alongside traditional design motifs. There is still a focus on keeping nature and the outdoors involved in design — so that it never feels too far away.

Incorporating Global Balustrade Design Ideas into Your Space

Global inspiration isn’t only for travel magazines, these trends can easily be incorporated into your space. Now that you’ve heard more about different balustrade design ideas.

Start by considering the focal points of your design, such as staircases and balconies. These areas are prime spots to showcase eye-catching balustrades that reflect global aesthetics. For instance, using decorative balustrades with intricate patterns inspired by Middle Eastern designs can transform a simple staircase into a statement piece. Similarly, a balcony adorned with balustrades that incorporate natural materials and symbolic carvings from African artistry can add both elegance and cultural depth.

DIY vs Professional: What You Need to Know About Balustrade Installation

DIY vs Professional: What You Need to Know About Balustrade Installation

Balustrades — they can be the finishing factor that pulls everything together. From stainless steel to timber, they are versatile and add a touch of style or personality to any space. More than just a safety feature, balustrades serve as an architectural accent. So when it comes to balustrade installation, the choice between a DIY approach and hiring professional installers can significantly impact your final result.

Whether you’re considering DIY balustrade installation for a personal touch or leaning towards the reliability of professional balustrade installers, it’s essential to weigh the benefits and challenges of each option.

DIY vs Professional Balustrade Installation

Navigating the decision between DIY and professional balustrade installation is an exciting opportunity to tailor your project to perfection. Each option presents unique advantages and considerations that can shape the outcome.

Let’s explore the empowering possibilities of both DIY balustrade installation and professional balustrade installation, empowering you to choose the path that aligns best with your vision and objectives.

DIY Balustrade Installation

Embarking on a DIY balustrade design and/or installation can be a rewarding experience, particularly for those who relish hands-on projects and the satisfaction of creating something with their own two hands.

Here are some compelling reasons why DIY might appeal to you:

  • Cost savings: By eliminating labour costs, DIY installation can be more budget-friendly. You have control over the materials and tools, potentially reducing overall expenses.
  • Personal satisfaction: Completing a DIY project can provide a sense of accomplishment and pride. You get to witness your vision come to life exactly as you imagined.
  • Creative control: With a custom balustrade design, you can experiment with styles, materials, and finishes that match your personal taste and property’s aesthetic.

But it’s important to be aware of the challenges that come with DIY installation:

  • Skill and knowledge requirements: Properly installing balustrades requires a solid understanding of construction techniques and safety standards. Mistakes can compromise the structural integrity and safety of the balustrades, as well as be a costly experience after the fact.
  • Time commitment: DIY projects often take significantly longer than professional installations. Balustrade installation involves precise measurements and potentially complex procedures, which can be time-consuming and demanding. If you have a specific timeline for your project, it could be best to seek professional balustrade installers.
  • Risk of errors: Even minor errors can lead to significant safety issues. Misaligned or insecurely fastened balustrades can pose hazards, particularly in high-traffic areas or at heights. Often these mistakes aren’t noticeable until after the project has been completed.

Professional Balustrade Installation

Choosing professional balustrade installation opens the door to a world of possibilities, where your vision for a stunning, safe, and durable space can become a reality. Here are just a few reasons why opting for professional installation is a decision you won’t regret:

Here’s why hiring professionals could be the right choice for you:

  • Expertise and experience: Professional balustrade installers bring years of experience and specialised skills to the table. They are well-versed in the best practices for installing various types of balustrades, ensuring precise and secure installations.
  • Compliance with standards: They understand local building codes and safety regulations, guaranteeing that your balustrades meet all necessary standards. This compliance is crucial for both legal and safety reasons.
  • Quality assurance: With professional balustrade installation, you can expect high-quality workmanship. Companies use the best materials and techniques, resulting in durable and long-lasting balustrades. They also have relationships within the industry that could potentially help you.
  • Efficiency and convenience: Professional installers can complete the job much faster than a DIY approach. This efficiency minimises disruption to your property and allows you to enjoy your new balustrades sooner.
  • Peace of mind: Knowing that your balustrades have been installed by experts provides peace of mind. You can be confident in the safety and durability of the installation, reducing any stress or uncertainty.

The History of Balustrades: From Ancient Architecture to Modern Marvels

The History of Balustrades: From Ancient Architecture to Modern Marvels

When you walk down your stairs or across your terrace, you’re actually crossing centuries of history but you might have never stopped to consider the history of balustrades.

In the vast world of architecture, few things blend both beauty and functionality as seamlessly as balustrades. Even though they are often overlooked, with their rhythmic patterns of posts and railings, they have adorned structures from ancient times to the modern day.

As experts in balustrade installation, we’re excited to share the story of their evolution. But this is more than a historical overview — it’s an invitation to appreciate the artistry in construction and the timeless allure of design.

What are Balustrades?

If you’ve ever admired a handsome balustrade, you wouldn’t be alone. The term “balustrade” finds its roots in 17th-century Italy, coined for its resemblance to blossoming pomegranate flowers, known as “balaustra” in Italian.

Balustrades, at their essence, are architectural features consisting of a row of shaped pillars or vertical elements topped with a railing. This distinctive design serves both decorative and functional purposes, making them versatile elements in various structures, including bridges, terraces, balconies, and staircases. The primary components of a balustrade include the vertical supports, often resembling small columns, and the horizontal railing that tops them.

These structures serve a range of functions, from blocking off areas for privacy to providing safety and support. Balustrades play a crucial role in enhancing architectural aesthetics, adding visual and physical balance to staircases, and can range from simple to highly decorative.

Steel Studio is your reliable balustrade supplier, read more about our balustrades for stairs here.

The History of Balustrades

You may be wondering when balustrades were invented. It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly but the earliest examples of balustrades installation date back to ancient sculptural murals between the 13th and 7th centuries BC, primarily seen lining the windows in depictions of Assyrian palaces.

Ancient Chinese buildings also featured balustrades on their terraces, with wooden and marble versions appearing in private gardens by the 10th century. In the history of balustrades, people were incorporating them into their architectural designs as early as that.

During the Greek and Roman rule, balustrades fell out of fashion — replaced by grand columns. But they gained their popularity back during the Renaissance period. They were notably seen in designs by Michelangelo and Bernini, as well as in the Medici palace in Italy. The balustrade heads from this period were delicately detailed, depicting animal motifs and flora-inspired designs.

Since then, balustrades have become a ubiquitous architectural feature, combining both functional and aesthetic elements across a wide array of structures.

Modern Balustrades

While the history of balustrades is fascinating, it’s their future that’s truly exciting.

In the contemporary architectural landscape, balustrades have undergone a significant transformation. Modern versions employ a diverse palette of materials, including sleek metals, transparent glass, and sustainable composites, allowing for both aesthetic versatility and customisation.

Technological advancements, such as computer-aided design (CAD) and eco-friendly manufacturing processes, contribute to precision and sustainability. Design innovation flourishes, ranging from minimalist balustrade installations to intricate patterns, aligning seamlessly with the open-concept spaces characteristic of modern architecture. Modern balustrades not only ensure safety but also serve as artistic statements, contributing to the overall sophistication of contemporary structures.

Modern balustrades have a strong focus on safety as well as aesthetics. As trusted balustrade specialists, we ensure our projects are SANS-compliant. Discover more about our balustrade installation projects here.

The Difference Between Balustrades and Bannisters

While often used interchangeably, “balustrades” and “bannisters” refer to two different architectural features.

Balustrades include the entire system of balusters, handrails, and supporting posts, forming a protective barrier or decorative feature along elevated structures.

Banisters, on the other hand, specifically refer to the handrail component within the balustrade, providing a functional handhold for individuals navigating stairs.

While both contribute to the overall safety and aesthetic of a staircase or terrace, understanding their unique roles is essential for precise communication and effective architectural planning. If you’re still unsure, your professional balustrade supplier will be happy to explain further during the design process.

Take Advantage of The Next Evolution of Balustrades

These architectural treasures have been refined over centuries, in palaces and museums, and now they can enrich your next project. You don’t need to make the same journey if you’re googling for “balustrade installers near me” because the Steel Studio is here.

The Steel Studio Guide to Staircase Design

June 9, 2023 by inbound

Here’s a quick guide on what to consider before you get started on building a staircase

Ever wonder why Pinterest has so many staircase designs? It’s because stairs are an essential element in any space.

Designers often make staircases focal points, using bold and captivating architecture and materials. With just a touch of glass or metal, stairs can transform simple spaces, adding personality and warmth to a room.

To help you on your journey to building your dream staircase, we’ve created the Steel Studio Guide to Staircase Design. Here are some factors to consider before construction.

1. Know Your Shapes

Staircase shapes are a great place to begin the design process. The shape of your staircase includes aesthetics and functionality. Think about how much room you have, what shape will best suit the space, and what shape best complements the style you’re considering.

Some common staircase shapes include:

  • Straight: This is ideal for spaces with limited area and is usually a simple, straightforward design.
  • L-Shaped: This is great for a change of direction and is suitable for larger areas. An L-shaped design creates a nice visual break in a room.
  • U-Shaped: This is a popular home design choice because it provides a 180-degree turn. U-shaped staircases are suitable for larger floor areas.
  • Spiral: This compact design works well for tight spaces and is visually appealing. It’s a modern design that is often a centrepiece.

Our team of professionals can help assess what shape is best for your project, but don’t be afraid to research this more online.

2. Size (and Space) Matters

The last thing you want is an awkward flight of stairs in the middle of a room. That’s why size and space are important considerations when building a staircase.

A Steel Studio consultant can advise you on best practices for the area you’re working with, so you can create a design with correct measurements. Knowing how much space you have to play with also gives you a good idea of what will be the most functional.

Sizing is crucial to having well-proportioned stairs. In construction, staircases must follow building code requirements and be SANS-compliant to ensure safety.

Consider this when it comes to size:

  • Rise: this is the vertical height between each step and is necessary for safety.
  • Run: this is the horizontal depth of each step and is necessary to provide stability.
  • Headroom: this is the amount of space above a staircase. You want to leave enough room for a comfortable clearance.

3. Styles and Trends

Now for the fun part: selecting a style. Like other aspects of interior design, there’s a massive catalogue of trends to choose from.

Ask yourself what your space needs. Are the stairs going to be more functional or aesthetic? Do you want the staircase to be the focus, or prefer it to be muted?

Consider:

  • Space compatibility: think about the overall theme of your space and where the staircase will sit. Does a traditional, modern, or minimalist design best suit the area?
  • Trending designs: get to know the latest trends. We’ve mentioned Pinterest, but there are plenty of staircase trend articles available with ideas. For a more local perspective, check out our Insta to see our current projects and trends in South Africa.

A friendly tip – trends come and go, so choose something modern and timeless. Our materials section can help you achieve that.

4. Materials

Once you settle on a shape and style, it’s time to choose the materials. Consider material costs against the cost of maintenance. Some materials need more upkeep than others. For example, hardwood is a popular choice for staircases, but it may cost more to maintain than metal or concrete.

Some things to consider when selecting materials:

  • Durability: choose materials that are strong enough to withstand daily use. Steel and concrete are known for longevity.
  • Sourcing: materials need to be sourced and manufactured. Custom staircase designs may require more sourcing and manufacturing time, work with our consultants to draw up a plan and schedule.
  • Appearance: some shapes and styles pair well with specific materials. For example, an industrial-chic look goes well with dark metal or timber.

Here’s a quick glance at the pros and cons of different materials:

Pros Cons
Stainless Steel High durability, aesthetically appealing, versatile, easily available, low maintenance  High cost, challenging installation
Mild Steel Moderate durability, aesthetically appealing, versatile, cost-effective Moderate maintenance
Glass  Good durability, aesthetically appealing, good for natural light, environmentally sustainable, this refers to the balustrading and the treads. The stair structure will be metal Glass is only an option for the balustrading
Timber Aesthetically appealing Maintenance, low fire resistance, moderate durability, susceptible to weather and elements, expensive

5. The Budget

Your budget gives you an idea of what materials and styles you can work with. Here are some ways to optimise it:

  • Quality: safety and durability should never be compromised. When selecting shapes, styles, and materials, investing in high-quality materials and craftsmanship can serve you for years to come.
  • Long-Term Costs: choosing low-cost materials and construction may work short term, but it could result in higher maintenance later, with more expenses down the line. Work out a budget that balances upfront costs and long-term value.
  • Multiple Quotes: research material costs and get quotes from different suppliers. Comparing quotes shows you what to expect cost-wise, so you can find good quality services that suit your budget.

Putting It All Together

Staircases are pivotal design elements that are both functional and aesthetic. Planning is crucial to building a staircase, and so is research. Spend as much time as you need to go over shapes, trends, materials, and costs to design and create something that personalises your space and stands the test of time.

It’s always best to get a consultation for your design projects. Steel Studio stays on top of the latest design trends, using high-quality materials and craftsmanship that never compromises on safety or compliance. We know how to make your custom designs a reality!

What is the Biggest Challenge Facing the Construction Industry Today?

March 6, 2023 by inbound

We Unpack the Construction Sector’s Problems & Talk Solutions

The past three years have been quite a rollercoaster, so it’s nice to return to a new normal. But for many South African businesses and industries, the post-pandemic excitement is short-lived.

Everyone feels the impacts of loadshedding, global supply chain issues, and extreme weather conditions. And the South African construction sector was hit just as hard.

The Energy Crisis

South Africans feel the sting of loadshedding no matter what stage we’re on. The ongoing energy crisis is causing massive setbacks in the construction industry.

Companies and developers find ways to work around power outages. Quick fixes like inverters and generators keep projects up and running. Some construction projects even ask for an exemption from loadshedding to remain on schedule.

While this works temporarily, they are short-term solutions for a bigger problem. Power outages also affect manufacturing, so there is a significant shortage of building materials like steel. That increases costs and timelines. Projects experience delays, become prolonged, or worse, abandoned. International investors are pretty hesitant to finance construction projects here, hurting the industry’s growth more.

Post-pandemic Work Culture

Before the pandemic, commercial office spaces were the norm. With the introduction of remote work, the future of these spaces is in question.

Even companies using hybrid work models – having employees come into the office intermittently throughout the week – are considering downsizing.

Cost-cutting and retrenchments are ongoing following the pandemic. Businesses are now looking to rent smaller, temporary workspaces where employees can hot desk, i.e., use any work area without having an assigned desk or cubicle.

So, what does this mean for construction? In a post-pandemic world, commercial office spaces may not be necessary anymore.

What Can We Do About Loadshedding?

While our industry faces some tough challenges, we have always been a country of problem solvers.

When it comes to the energy crisis, we need actual transformation. Experts say renewable energy is the fastest, most cost-effective way to resolve the issue. Wind and solar plants are practical and can be up and running in less than two years.

The mining sector and local municipalities have already started initiatives to produce their own electricity supply using alternative energy sources like solar and nuclear. Relying on a single electricity supplier is no longer a sustainable option.

The construction industry needs to follow suit. Putting pressure on the government to explore alternative energy sources as a collective will accelerate these initiatives.

What’s Next for Office Spaces?

How we work is changing, and that means changing our spaces too. Co-working or renting out temporary workspaces may be the next step in a post-pandemic, remote/hybrid world.

For businesses and companies, the benefits are obvious. It’s cost-saving and scalable. The flexibility of these agreements works well for growing companies and smaller businesses. Built-in facilities like internet connection, printers, and kitchen and bathroom amenities also reduce overhead costs.

For the construction industry, this means building more of these spaces for the South African market. Popular workspaces like WeWork, Huddle and Workbar are good examples of co-working spaces. Short-term office rental spaces can thrive in larger cities like Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Architects and designers should encourage the growth of these spaces, which holds potential for businesses and communities.

The Difference Between Mild Steel and Stainless Steel

December 15, 2022 by inbound

Choosing Between Mild Steel and Stainless Steel Finishes for Your Property

Steel is a common material used worldwide throughout the construction of many architectural fabrications. The metal can be divided into different variations, with mild and stainless steel as two of the most popular choices.

So, what exactly is the difference between mild steel and stainless steel?

Stainless and mild steel have many characteristics that set them apart. The properties that vary the most between these steel types are strength, ductility, hardness, varying aesthetics, and cost.

Selecting the right steel type for your balustrades or staircases will impact the cost and the execution of your design vision for your project.
To help guide you in steel selection, we break down the difference between mild steel and stainless steel in the below article.

The Composition: Stainless vs. Mild Steel

Mild steel, sometimes referred to as low-carbon steel, has no more than 0.25% carbon. This makes it less brittle than stainless steel.

On the other hand, stainless steel is an alloy with a minimum of 11% chromium content. It does not stain, corrode or rust as easily as ordinary steel but it is not stain-proof. It’s also called corrosion-resistant steel based on its different alloy types and grades.

The difference between mild steel and stainless steel is that stainless steel is alloyed with chromium, nickel, molybdenum and other elements to improve its mechanical and chemical properties. As a result, it’s less malleable and harder than mild steel.

Strength and Toughness

Stainless steel is stronger than mild steel because of the chromium in its composition. That’s why it’s used to create and design objects that can withstand impactful force and frequent usage. It is more resistant to high temperatures than mild steel, so it can maintain its strength in fire or high heat.

Mild steel’s strength is fairly lower but can be strengthened by carbon addition.

Toughness is the steel’s ability to absorb energy and deform plastically before fracture. Stainless steel is tougher than mild steel because of its higher carbon content.

Maintenance and Durability

Stainless steel is more durable than mild steel because it’s resistant to rust and extreme weather conditions. This makes stainless steel easy to maintain and clean. The smooth and shiny texture prevents dirt from easily sticking to its surface.

Keep in mind that polishing stainless steel one to four times a year makes it shinier. Stainless steel makes good kitchenware and balustrades because it’s easy to clean — a simple swab with a microfiber cloth is enough to get the stains off.

As much as mild steel is budget-friendly, it can be high maintenance. It needs to be painted often, depending on how fast the paint fades or peels off. Without paint, it can take two to four days for it to rust, especially in extreme weather conditions. Expensive finishes can however reduce the likelihood of rust.

With upkeep costs or pricey finishes like powder coating, it can be argued that mild steel is not that much more affordable than stainless steel in the end. So, it is smart to pick the kind of steel based off of the aesthetic you most desire.

Aesthetics

A stainless steel staircase or balustrade offers an attractive shiny, clean, silver-white look that is perfect for spaces that need a modern touch. This is also a favourite in commercial or public spaces that have high foot traffic.

Mild steel has an understated look that is a touch homier. It adds a warm and rustic look to a home. It also allows for more room to customise your final look as you can choose your colour or finish.

At Steel Studio, we feel that both kinds of steel will deliver where beauty is concerned. We make sure of it. It all comes down to your preferred aesthetic.

Cost

Stainless steel is known to be pricey in comparison to mild steel. Polishing and finishing stainless steel come at a cost. However, a stainless steel product is an investment, even if you pay a higher cost upfront. You enjoy its features for longer than mild steel and with less maintenance. Making it the best option economically and financially.

Mild steel can be much more affordable than stainless steel material. However, if the design is top of mind, you may end up with a more expensive mild steel system due to the labour component to achieve certain design finishes.

It’s important to request a quote for comparison if you’re considering an alternative design in mild steel.

To sum up; while stainless steel is generally more expensive, it requires less maintenance and generally lasts much longer.

The Steel Studio Recommendation

Mild steel and stainless steel are different, and both are useful in the different roles served in your home. The powder coating in mild steel products might be artistically pleasing and trending currently but can also be challenging to install.

Each steel has its limitations, but stainless steel is a classic. With low maintenance and an eco-friendly footprint (as it is recyclable), this is the option we will always put forward.
